Languid and luxurious are the temperate days of August, as we drift blissfully through summer’s heady heights. A warm welcome to all is the order of the day, with visitors from near and far streaming into the gallery, situated in the heart of York’s bustling town centre. This month we enjoy ongoing celebrations, revel in the season’s sporting delights and offer a glimpse at a dazzling array of newly arrived artwork.
Garnering an extraordinary reaction from collectors new and returning, Clare Haley’s 10th annual solo show, 'Clare Haley: Light of Yorkshire' has opened to a racing start. With over two-thirds of the collection sold before the first week was through, we could think of no better way to celebrate Clare’s time with the gallery than this, the clear adoration and voracious appetite for her work. But fans of Clare’s wild, elemental landscapes need not fear, as there still remains an exceptional body of paintings to experience and acquire, as well as the special release, signed, limited-edition print, ‘Heading North’. By turns invigorating, sincere and ethereal, this collection of work by Clare is truly special. See it while you can until Sunday, 24 August on the first floor of the gallery.
With Test match season upon us, we would like to take the opportunity to recognise artist Stephen Hawkins and his affectionate portrayals of this beloved summer sport. Cricket whites, green lawns, the anticipation of the first innings and of course, that most British of pastimes - the tea break. All of these and more Stephen captures with his distinct and affecting style, where loose brushstrokes meet a learned eye for light and movement. The results are scenes both lucid and undefined; idyllic days filtered through the warming tones of memory. These are timeless additions to any collection, by an artist who translates the essence of British country life like no other.
With a bounty of new art to discover, this month the gallery welcomes work by Tina Spratt, Michael Simpson, Natalie Stutely, Andrew Grant Kurtis, Ian Rawling, Edward Hersey, Carl Whitfield, Stephen Park, Rupert Aker, Andy Winn, Alan Smith, Alex Hill and Jay Nottingham. With additional artwork due to arrive throughout the month, be sure to check our Recently Acquired page and keep up to date with the latest available pieces.
We hope you will enjoy our August Newsletter. As ever, we thank you for your patronage and look forward to welcoming you to the gallery soon.
