Setting sail in valiant pursuit of supressing smuggling in the colonies, Ken Hammond’s depiction of the 20-gun, sixth-rate post ship, HMS Rose, is a marvellous marine triumph. From the sepia ocean the great vessel shines, making haste and pushing headlong into the tumultuous, choppy waters, causing a sparkling spray to cascade off of the hull.
