Gracefully weaving warmth and draughtsmanship into the innermost fabric of her work, Kate is renowned for her vibrant, dynamic landscapes of Yorkshire and beyond.

Raised in Suffolk, Kate’s interest in art and drawing started in her childhood. At the age of 9, she learned the rudiments of technical drawing from her architect grandfather, who made her a drawing board and T square and showed her how to sharpen a pencil with a knife. She later studied fine art at York St John University, specialising in textile design, which led her to a career as a commercial textile designer for many years. Fettered by restricted briefs, industrial applications and sterile working spaces, Kate turned to painting as a ‘hands-on’ artistic release. She began painting landscapes when she moved to Hebden Bridge in 2005, and a year later, left her job in textile design to pursue her passion full time.

Kate’s background in textile design is evident through her opulent use of colour and pattern, layering inks, acrylics and watercolours to achieve a rich depth of colour and texture as she interprets the world around her. She sees patterns in everything, and enjoys applying a technical, almost architectural approach to the landscape and combining it with the decorative nature of textile design. Further embellished by glinting accents of gold leaf and lines of gold thread that draw the eye across the landscape, highlighting paths and exaggerating curves, Kate’s work is as alive and ever changing as light itself.

Today, Kate works from her home in Hebden Bridge, which continues to serve as a deep source of inspiration for her work. From the patchwork of houses on the surrounding hills to bright rows of flowerpots down below, Kate remains ever inspired by the history, warmth, colour and creative lifeblood of her community.
