As we burst forth into the spring ahead, we select five pieces from our collection that are currently brightening our days.
1. ‘Resting at the End of the Day, Beside Market Weighton Canal, Yorkshire’ by Daniel Van der Putten. Oil on Panel. 15.5” x 13”. £4,485.

Chosen by: Philip Short, Director
“Grounded in the classical landscape tradition but equally embracing contemporary sensibilities, Daniel is nothing short of a modern master. This piece is a perfect example of this blended approach, the gentle composition setting a peaceful scene, while his signature application of vibrant colour sets the sky ablaze with rosy pinks and liquid gold. It’s a scene I could quite happily stare at time and time again, each glance gifting a renewed experience.”
2. ‘Little Red Coffee Pot’ by Ian Rawling, PS. Pastel. 8” x 8”. £475

Chosen by: Deanna Dawkins, Gallery Manager
“Small yet intricately detailed in his photorealistic style, Ian Rawling’s ‘Little Red Coffee Pot’ packs a powerful punch. The gently curving spout of the pot gives a hint of elegance, while its chipped base and battered rim demonstrate a refreshing sense of imperfection and the palpable passage of time. Ian breathes new life into a seemingly inanimate object, bringing to mind past conversations over coffee, and perhaps a wonder as to what it has overheard in its time. At a price of £475 (or £47.50 a month for 10 months with Own Art), it makes for a refreshingly affordable and engaging addition to a contemporary collection.
3. ‘Cornfield, Lancashire’ by Michael John Ashcroft, Oil on Panel. 10” x 8”. £950.

Chosen by: Kirsty Maclennan, Senior Gallery Assistant.
“Michael is such an exceptional painter. His ability to capture an atmosphere in his work is something I have not often come across. For me, this painting embodies the intangible feeling of summer. The sweetness and the sadness of it. The temperate air, the birds trilling in the trees. The looming knowledge that it will end, only adding to the loveliness of those long, hot days.”
4. ‘In Full Bloom’ by Alan Smith. Oil on panel. 12” x 12”. £695.

Chosen by: Sarah Pearson Short, Gallery Assistant.
“I find this painting so invigorating, a happy reminder of the warm, flourishing months to come. Alan’s painterly style borders on the abstract, perfectly fitting for this subject. It is as though we are catching glimpses of the bright blooms from the corner of our eye, as we walk through a room. They are slightly out of focus, a shade undefinable - their composition ever-changing.”
5. ‘Low Pressure off Prussia Cove, Cornwall’ by Julian Mason. Oil on canvas. 28” x 28”. £3,000.

Chosen by: All
“Standing in front of this piece is a humbling experience. Lulled into its frame by a symphony of blues and a soft, yet dazzling light dancing across the water, an initial sense of calm washes over. Then, crashing with undeniable force, you can practically feel the spray of the waves on your face, the sheer scale of the piece amplifying the effect. It’s beautiful, dangerous and invigorating all at once. In a single painting, Julian has, quite spectacularly, harnessed the power of the sea.”
