As we settle into the year, February offers a host of captivating new acquisitions to explore.
1. ‘One Time Only’ by Clare Haley. Oil on panel. 18” x 24”. £1,095.
Chosen by: Philip Short, Director
“A powerful, transportive painting. Clare never fails to convey her Yorkshire, a place of almost celestial beauty, in which the boundaries between moorland and sky are blurred, dissolving into one and other before and beyond the horizon.”
2. ‘Weigh Anchor at Dawn’ by Alex Hill. Oil on panel. 24” x 24”. £1,950
Chosen by: Alan Short, Director
“It is a cool misty morning, as the warmly lit galleon is emptied of its crew, rowing ashore to rest and restock. There are so many stories to be gleaned from this painting; the longer you look, the richer they become. It is a phenomenal scene.”
3. ‘York Minster’ by Kirsty Maclennan. Original linocut. 13” x 17”. £34
Chosen by: Deanna Dawkins, Gallery Manager
“I love the contrast of linocuts. The stark lines and areas of colour or shade, yes; but also their inherent contradictory nature. In most cases, even the prints that might initially seem straightforward are revealed to be deliciously complex upon closer observation. Variations in ink distribution from different amounts of pressure or small imperfections from a stray splodge all tell the story of the process and assert the individuality of the artwork. Like an original painting, no two will ever be exactly alike. Combined with the fact that ‘York Minster’ is a work from our very own Gallery Assistant, Kirsty, the sense of enjoyment I get from this piece is increased tenfold.
4. ‘Scottish Summer’ by Kitty Lambton. Print. 12” x 16”. £38
Chosen by: Kirsty Maclennan, Gallery Assistant.
“Kitty’s design is the epitome of harmonious simplicity. One of the greatest pleasures of working at the gallery, is being able to offer a range of art accessible to all budgets. This is something close to my heart, because art is and should always be for everyone. This open edition print is not only an elegant, uplifting contemporary classic, it is also £38. Collecting art is a passion, not an exclusive club.”
5. ‘Peonies’ by Alan Smith. Oil on panel. 12” x 12”. £695
Chosen by: Sarah Pearson Short, Gallery Assistant.
“I was immediately drawn to Alan’s latest painting, with its blooming spring bouquet and calming pastel hues. It is a bright, fresh, revitalising piece and a joyful reminder, of the long warm months to come.”
