Five Fine Art Favourites: July

/ Tuesday 7th of July, 2020

As we swiftly enter the first month of summer, we take a closer look at a few of the paintings that are currently catching our eye.

1. ‘Red Wine and Stilton’ by Colin Wilson. Acrylic on board. 9” x 12”. £2,450.

Chosen by: Philip Short, Director

“Colin Wilson is a formidable young talent on the contemporary still life art scene, as this painting very well goes to show. His execution is pristine, not a brushstroke in sight. I have always been particularly taken with still life as a genre and to see such contemporary talent nurtured in the UK is part of what makes my job so enjoyable. With its simple composition, limited palette and subjects that shine out from beyond the painting, 'Red Wine and Stilton' is a true statement piece for any collection.”

2. ‘Barn Owl’ by Wayne Westwood. Oil on panel. 12” x 20”. £1,885.

Chosen by: Alan Short, Director

“An elegant and finely-detailed painting, this is Wayne Westwood at the height of his powers. I’m immediately drawn to the owl’s striking heart-shaped face at the centre of the painting, with her snowy white feathers a fantastic contrast to the pitch-black background. 'Barn Owl' is quite simply a celebration of one of the British countryside’s finest creatures”

3. ‘My Favourite Friends’ by Amanda Jackson. Oil on panel. 10” x 5”. £525.

Chosen by: Deanna Dawkins, Gallery Manager

“I have a real soft spot for Amanda’s work. Her ability to stimulate such an intense rush of nostalgia and emotion with a single glance is truly astounding. I find this piece particularly endearing; two beloved characters of childhood tales act as sentinel bookends, lovingly keeping watch over the collection of classics between them. My imagination instantly begins to run wild, traversing my own childhood memories before diving headfirst into the adventures held within the well-turned, leather bound pages.”

4. 'Garden Studio’ by Mike Hall. Acrylic on board. 12” x 14”. £795.

Chosen by: Kirsty Maclennan, Gallery Assistant.

“It is such a pleasure whenever we receive new work by Mike Hall. He is a storyteller of quiet magnitude, with every piece offering intricate, intriguing details to lives lived beyond the scene. In Garden Studio we are invited into the artist’s own world, in a poetic locale of paintbrushes and paint smeared palettes, with a light-dappled summer garden beyond. I will never tire of being drawn into Mike’s enveloping, sun-soaked paintings and being given an opportunity to relish beauty in the everyday.”

5. ‘August Colour’ by Julian Mason. Oil on canvas. 16” x 12”. £750.

Chosen by: All

“Whetting our appetites for the balmy, invigorating vibrance of midsummer, Julian Mason’s August Colour is a firm favourite amongst us all. Julian’s zeal for painting en plein air is palpable, with great sweeping strokes of his paintbrush, he brings the vibrant, rushing poppy meadow to life; the exuberance of his style and technique barely contained within the canvas.”
