Obscured by hundreds of years’ worth of dust and grime, the previously hidden sitter of this portrait shines once more. After undergoing a magnificent transformation, we now presume this to be a portrait of the young Charles Edward Stuart, or ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’, bedecked in his characteristic scarlet cape.
With the painting being approximately three-hundred years old, the restoration included an extensive clean, as well as being retouched and re-lined. The result is an artwork of rich-hues and distinguished technique. From the discernible powdered wig, softly lit to highlight the iridescent silver strands, to the shimmering, gold-trimmed silken overcoat, the painting reveals the importance and wealth of the sitter.
